Liebherr cranes are involved in a multibillion dollar project at the Suez Canal in Egypt.
A total of ten duty cycle crawler and crawler cranes are being deployed to assist in the construction of two road tunnels under the canal, near the city of Port Said in the north of the country. One of the company’s newest generation duty cycle crawler cranes, an HS 81000 HD belonging to the German construction firm Zublin, is among the group of machines involved in the US$4bn project.
Equipped with a hydraulic slurry wall grab from Leffer, the crane is the successor to the HS 855HD model and comes with a diesel engine delivering 390kW of power. Able to operate on 16-liters of fuel per hour, the machine has an Eco-Silent mode meaning the speed of the motor can be reduced to a predefined level.
On behalf of the Egyptian armed forces, Zublin along with Orasom Construction, Trevi and an Egyptian construction company is working to erect slurry walls with a total area of 520,000m². The walls, which are 1.2m wide and between 20m and 70m deep, are being made for access roads, as well as shafts for subsequent tunnel excavations.
The soil in the region consists of around 80% clay, with only the last 5m to 6m consisting of sand. Liebherr is supplying nine duty cycle crawler cranes, including: four HS 885 HDs, two HS 875 HDs, an HS 855 HD, an HS 845 HD, and a LR 1160.
