Claas rolls out second generation Axion 900 series

Claas has developed a new generation of Axion 900 large tractors. The high-powered vehicles are aimed at contractors and larger farms and replace the outgoing original models launched in 2011.

New features include more powerful 6-cylinder, Stage IV (Tier 4) FPT Cursor 9 engines with 8.7-liter cubic capacity and a variable geometry turbo as standard that maximizes charge-air pressure based on current load and engine speed.

The result of this is that 70% of maximum torque is available while idle, with maximum output in the new series of tractors ranging between 325hp and 445hp. With 18% more torque at lower speeds than was previously possible, and engine speed reduced from 800rpm to 650rpm when going from idle to stationary, fuel savings are approximately 2 liters an hour.

The constantly variable transmission control system uses a new generation of software that means that cruise control can be deactivated with the accelerator pedal and the driver can switch between two saved engine drop values at the press of a button. A 12in touchscreen display and the ergonomic armrest provide convenience and comfort in the cab.

For in-depth coverage of the vehicle, be sure to read the September issue of iVT where the Axion 900 tractors will be the subject of a case study.
